In the old Polish countryside the custom of caroling has been syncretized with much older traditions, related to old-Slavic rituals. Those rituals were rooted in celebrations of the days growing longer after the winter solstice, and in rites of evoking nature’s fertility before the spring. Depending on the region of Poland, caroling was practiced between Christmas and the Ash Wednesday, or even up until Easter in some places (see the tag dziady śmigustne).
